Faith in God can be summarized by 1st Corinthians 3 vs 6. We may plant and we may water but it is only God that is capable of giving the increase. So then, in practical terms, faith is knowing that everything we could do would never be enough; so rather than doing all that we could do, we do instead what God wants us to do – which is what He has decided will be enough.
Yet even in this, faith is knowing that doing what God wants us to do is necessary but still not enough to get us our desires. Getting our desires is never going to determined by what we do – even if we do the right thing – but rather it is in the hands of God who – fortunately – invariably keeps His word to those who obey Him and works things out for the good of those that love Him and are called according to His purpose.
We get from God what we desire because He has bound Himself to honor obedience – not because we are obedient or because we have faith. It is not our faith in God that moves mountains; it is God. Faith in God is not about us: it is about the Divine God making Himself accessible to us. It is not to be simply defined as a recommended Christian character trait – it is actually a gift from God. It is the pathway God created through which He gives us His gifts. “Have faith in God” Jesus once said, which is to say “make sure you do your bit.”
Be blessed.
